According to the prevailing opinion, the word “oregano” derives from the ancient Greek words “ὄρος”/óros/ (mountain) and “γάνος”/gános/ (brightness, joy) and refers to what brings joy and brightens the mountain. Oregano is a perennial herb with a particular aromatic scent, endemic mainly in the Mediterranean region, used since antiquity as a food flavoring but also in folk medicine for respiratory disorders.
Numerous recent scientific studies have demonstrated that oregano essential oil has strong antibiotic, antifungal and antioxidant properties that enhance the immune system naturally, without altering the body’s natural balance. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recognised oregano essential oil as a safe and potable substance (Generally Recognized As Safe-GRAS). Also, carvacrol has been approved for food use by the European Union (Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) No 872/2012)
Our careful choice of the oregano plant species, Origanum vulgare ssp. hirtum, endemic in Greece, was made with a view to creating a premium quality product, with unique antibiotic properties.
