While harvesting sage this morning for our floral water, something happened and we felt like listening to Greek folk music from Epirus on Spotify… Lament songs to be precise.

It could be because of Michalis’ memories from Epirus as a child, or me, remembering the dances in Vovousa festival last summer, the fact is that we almost ended up dancing in the middle of the field, amidst the sage plants. Which is kind of strange because we rarely agree when it comes to music. It was getting hot though, so we left the party for some other time.

Then Michalis told me that in Epirus people use to sing lament songs even in weddings, feeling that each wedding is a kind of small “death”, a separation. “These people from Epirus are crazy”, I silently thought. But weird as it stroke me, it kind of started to make sense as I kept on thinking about it while harvesting the sage.

It resonated somehow with how I was feeling at the moment, cutting the sage flowers, separating them from their roots, preparing them for distillation, so that we can have their essential oil and floral water.

And then I understood what Alexandros Gousiaris meant when he asked his cousin to play “separation music” to their tomato plants before harvesting, in the excellent documentary “When Tomatoes Met Wagner ” … (go and see it those of you who haven’t !)

And then, there is Christopher King of course. Who came to Epirus all the way from New York because of the laments. And he even wrote a book about it. Telling us how this music is healing, how it makes people feel as one. We as locals often can’t see what a visitor’s experience can grasp, and we probably can’t relate to this almost mystical side of these songs. “While you live, shine” is a documentary about his journey into this music.

Still, even though my childhood memories include more uplifting musical tones, I admit that there is something in these pentatonic scales that calms you, makes you feel that you belong to something bigger, and help you see separation as part of a chain that is going to be continued with life. Whether we want it or not.
Maybe there is a reason why sage is called the herb of immortality.
